Beaverwood Times - School Magazine

Full issue is available here

2010 Christmas edition
Pros:
  • The colour scheme used was appropriate for the festive season.
  • The Cover lines are very bold making it easier to attract the readers attention.
  • Fonts are easy to read.
  • The articles are very informative.
  • The comics and images make the magazine enjoyable to look at and read.
  • Available online making more eco friendly (less use of paper and electricity for the printer)

Cons:
  • The font size used was too big. They could have made it smaller and added more to the article.
  • The layout can be confusing for some people.
  • The extra white background is a waste of space.
  • Some of the article is useless as no-one can relate to.

My opinion:
I think that there are some good aspects (listed above) but there could have been more to be done to the appearance and content of the magazine. Such as the message they're trying to put across to the audience. Who their target audience is (KS3, KS4 or Sixth formers).

Here is another issue from Beaverwood School For girls.
I can distinguish that this magazine is  a Spring issue. Why? Due to the color scheme they have used. The use large, bold and floral ‘B’ and ‘T’ makes the masthead stand out and eye catching to the buyers/readers. This magazine also has subheading making it easy for the readers to find out about the next cover story.
This school magazine also includes articles about the recent news/event going on in the world. I think that this is a good reason to put in these articles as the younger years may not watch the news but will see and read what's happening currently. On the other hand, I don't think it links in with any significance to the school. Furthermore, I think that could be the reason why not many upper students buy/read this magazine as none of the articles apply or interests them.

I feel like this magazine lacks imagination and creativity. This is because the magazine cover I'm used to seeing have a cover photo and a few cover lines telling what the readers will expect in the issue. They could change or improve the front page by moving all these articles to the next page and have a simple front page with a student posing in the school grounds or something more relevant to the school.

  1. A thoughtful reflection with some interesting ideas for how it could be improved.
How could you develop your analysis now, in terms of which/how magazine conventions have been followed and subverted by this publication and the effect that it has?
